なんと、無理かなと思いながら研究をお願いした一人目の先生から、かなり好意的な返信を頂いてしまった。Visionに関する研究をすることになるとは少し前は全く考えていなかったけど、なかなか面白そうだし、研究ができるなら是非ここでしたいと思う。
メールのやりとりをここに載せておこう。
まず、この先生には次のように送った。

Dear Dr. Ben Upcroft,
Hi, I am ○○○ who is an exchange grad student (freshman for master
course) from Japan.
I'm really interested in taking a project 'Advanced Project in
Mechanical Engineering MECH7603' under you.
Advisor Dr Bo Feng told me to directly ask the instructor under whom I
want to do a research project.
So I would like to ask you about the availability for a project for
Semester 2 in 2008.
Let me introduce me briefly.
My advisor in Kobe University in Japan is ○○○.
We are working for the control of an airship, cooperating with ○○○.
We have tried or improved various method of nonlinear control, or
acquisition of surrounding image information by stereo camera,
actually flying an airship of our team.
For my dissertation in my home university, I developed dynamics model
of an airship, especially putting weight on the estimation of
aerodynamic forces and moments on an airship, and developed nonlinear
airship simulator.
It was the key point that the airship dynamics is formulated only by
the geometric shape of hull and fin, and can be constructed without
wind-tunnel experiment.
Next year in Japan, I am going to work on the control of airship for
the dissertation of master degree.
Now in UQ, my interest is to further refine the airship dynamics
model, or start working on the control or vision.
But so far I haven't progressed any about the control and vision.
I don't know whether I can choose the theme of project, but if I could
do the related research as above, I would appreciate.
I am arriving Brisbane on July 11th, so after that I can reach you and
talk in person.

Sorry I haven't got back to you earlier as I've been on a field trip
for a project of mine and haven't had internet access.
I'd be happy to supervise you. My research focus is in perception...
particularly vision and stereo vision. So we can come up with a
project in the vision area for you if that would suit.
It might be best to meet up when you get to Brisbane to discuss this
further. Please contact me when you get here, and we can sort out the
details.
Do you already have a scholarship to study at the University of
Queensland? I don't have any spare funding to support a student so
unfortunately will not be able to help you out there.

そうだよなぁ。Visionの先生だから、他の勝手な研究ができるわけないよな。ってか、その先生の下につく意味なくなるし。自分は今まで先生の専門からずれたことを研究してきたと思うがこれからは先生から多くのことを学びとりたいと思うし、やるならVisionだし、Visionでいいと思う。
あと、やはりもう学校に入学許可は出ているのかというは言っておいたほうが良かったか。先生の下で研究したいから、入学許可をくれというようなメールが多いんだろうな。
で、より詳細な研究テーマはどう決めればいいかわからないが、先にある程度考えておきたいので、聞いてみた。また、自分はVisionの勉強はあまりしてないけどたった１学期分で研究できるもんなんだろうかという心配があるので、それとなくVisionはあまりできないよと知らせておいた。

beforehand you are interested in? Or should I suggest the theme I am
